DANCING BUILDING

Praga.
Bellissimo.

Prague.
Along the east bank of Vltava River, starting from the old town and heading south direction, suddenly…
it’s impossible not see it.
Among historical blocks, full of baroque and art nouveau, suddenly…
you will get impressed.
You will admire a sinuous skin  which unrolls itself in thousand windows on a corner and you will admire a glass tower shaped like a soft cloth.
It’s the Dancing Building. Absolutely beautiful.

It doesn’t stifle neither for a moment the history around it, but it fits perfectly in the city mesh, completing it.

Apart from its extraordinary beauty, the thing that impresses me more about it, it’s its name: the dancing building. In fact it is!
The two towers represent two dancers who dance in a romantic embrace, and what a dancers! It deals with, as Frank Gehry said, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, respectively the glass tower and the masonry tower.

And when you look at it, it’s like that … it conveys passion and movement, and I think that is its power.
It’s sure that Gehry has not designed the building thinking about the two dancers, but, as he declaired in the interview with Irena Fialova, “I think it happened with Vlado in my studio one day. We were looking at it and… but it was said as a joke, it was never inteded seriously. We never designed it. When we saw the pinched tower, it looked like a dress and I think Vlado said it looks like a dancer, like Ginger Rogers. And when he said that, I said well, the other tower must be Fred Astaire then”.
And so it was.

When you enter inside the building, you quickly realize that it’s a building of the ’90s, for its design, by Vlado Munic.
You cannot visit it in all its part, many floors are occupied by offices, but you can enter in the restaurant and in the coffee bar on the top, made of glass and mirror. That coffe bar is Ginger’s head.
Coming out on the terrace you can see whole Prague circling aroud Fred’s hat… a hat that is a work of art!
